Keep an eye out for posts that will assist you with your journey TO AND THROUGH college. We will provide tips that will help you with everything from studying to basic survival skills in college and more. If you have questions or would like to see a specific topic addressed, please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and let us know. We are also looking for student writers. How great would it be to share your thoughts with your fellow KIPP DC alumni? Interested? We’ll be reaching out to you soon.
The team at KIPP DC: KIPP Through College has been working diligently to provide you with current and thought provoking information to support you in your endeavors. In an effort to continue providing you with great support, our team has grown! Ms. Diggs, the
Career Path Advisor, is an in-house resource for internship and job information and all things career-related. Mr. Watson, the University Partnerships Manager, is responsible for building relationships with the colleges and universities that will hopefully create more opportunities for you! Ms. Bradley and Ms. Harrison, the College Support Advisors, along with Mr. Watson and Ms. Diggs, are working together to ensure that each and every one of you has the tools and support you need to make it to and through college.
So, let’s get started! Those of you who are currently in your first year are probably experiencing a different level of academic and personal expectations and responsibility. You are also being exposed to a new social network, both with your peers and the adults (faculty and staff) around you. There are some of you who have been able to transition into your new environment with undeniable ease and there are some of you have been a little more challenged by this adjustment. . Remember, you are not alone in your transition. There are many first year students who are having similar experiences. Reach out and make connections. This is one step you can take to ease the transition and to build your social network on campus.
Those of you who are currently in your second and third year have achieved a huge milestone. You have successfully moved on to the next phase of your college experience!!! You have become familiar with the expectations of a college student and you are utilizing resources such as a planner, the tutoring center, and career services, so that you can make sure you are staying on top of your game. Congratulations on making it here. Keep pushing through!
On another note, Spring Break is right around the corner for many of you. Some of you may already have plans confirmed while the rest of you may still be trying to figure out how to spend this much welcomed time off.
As you prepare to enjoy this college student pastime, we would like to offer you a few key safety tips.. If you are going out of town – Miami perhaps, be sure to keep your wits about you. Do not leave your group and wander off alone. We all know the infamous story about the disappearance of Natalie Holloway, during her trip to Aruba. We would like for you to be able to return and share the stories of the great time you had – or keep the good stories to yourself, that’s fine too. J We just want you to be safe.
Also, be aware of your surroundings. Staying at a hotel? Make note of security and other “safety” zones in the area. Be sure you ALWAYS know how to get back to your temporary home. Keep phone numbers for OFFICIAL taxi companies on hand and never get into any taxi by yourself. Just because you are partying with other folks your age who “seem nice” doesn’t necessarily mean that they all have good intentions. Accepting rides, drinks or anything from someone you have just met is NOT a good idea.
Staying local or returning to D.C. for your break? Join us for a visit. Stop by the KIPP Through College Office and let’s catch up over coffee or tea. We want to hear what you have been up to!
Congratulations to all of you on your accomplishments this year and we urge you not to get discouraged through those difficult times. Those difficult times help develop character!
Until next time…CRUSH the negative, EMBRACE your positive, and STEP into the growing new you!! Build a Better Tomorrow.
